Unfortunately, all the women who have been granted the opportunity have already been pre-selected and the entries are closed to any others, but from the numerous entries of brave women willing to take up this challenge, eighteen were chosen to participate in the final selection process workshop.
The selection process will give the applicants the chance to show that they have the physical stamina to undertake the eight month journey. Expedition organiser Enya Fehler said, "We will be looking for women with determination, persistence, commitment, mental and emotional strength." Above this, the participants need to be able to work as a team and stick together through the adventures of tow continents.
These selection workshops will take the participants through various exciting challenges such as abseilling, quad biking and a 'zipline tour'. At the end of it, fourteen women will be chosen to go on the expedition.
The expedition aim to promote Africa as a tourist destination and has already been endorsed by the Government. The Minister of Tourism and Environmental Affairs Mr. Marthinus van Schalkwyk said, "This initiative will go a long way in showcasing what we have as a continent and what South Africa can offer as a country. "
This exciting expedition for the fourteen selected women will kick off on International Women's Day- 8th March 2009.
We, the team at Bitou News, will be attending one of the 'physical interview' workshops and will bring you a story in June, accompanied by some action pics of these brave women!
